Meet Barbara

A Lifelong Jersey City Neighbor. A Voice for Working Families.

Assemblywoman Barbara McCann Stamato is a lifelong Jersey City resident, a dedicated public servant, and a champion for working families across New Jersey’s 31st Legislative District. Sworn into the General Assembly on January 9, 2024, Barbara brings decades of hands-on experience, deep neighborhood ties, and a relentless drive to serve the people she’s proud to call her neighbors.

Born and raised in the Greenville neighborhood of Jersey City, Barbara is the youngest of five children. Her 98-year-old mother still lives in their family home on Winfield Avenue — just a mile from where Barbara and her husband of over 30 years, Pat, raised their two sons, Alex and Gregory.

Barbara’s life is rooted in community and service. With a career that spans healthcare, government, and politics, she’s worked behind the scenes and on the front lines to get things done for local residents. Her experience gives her a unique understanding of the challenges facing Hudson County families — and the tools to do something about them.

Policy Priorities

Fighting for Affordability, Equity, and Accountability

Assemblywoman Barbara McCann Stamato fights for working families in Jersey City, Bayonne, and Kearny. In Trenton, she stands up to powerful interests and champions policies that tackle rising costs, education inequities, failing transit, and government transparency.

Affordability

Barbara is working to lower property taxes, expand affordable housing, and improve access to essential services — easing the burden on families being priced out of their own neighborhoods.

Equitable School Funding

She’s fighting for fair and transparent funding so that every student, in every community, has access to strong, well-resourced public schools that support learning and success.

Better Public Transportation

Barbara is pushing for reliable, accessible transit by investing in infrastructure that shortens commutes, reduces delays, and improves service for riders across Hudson County.

Government Transparency

One of the few Democrats to vote against weakening OPRA, Barbara believes the public deserves open access to government decisions and full accountability for tax dollars.

Ballot Integrity

Barbara voted no on ballot reforms that limit transparency because she firmly believes voters — not party insiders — should always have the final say in choosing their elected leaders.

Women’s Rights

As a member of the Community Development and Women’s Affairs Committee, Barbara defends reproductive freedom, equal pay, and policies that uplift women and families.
